And it is technically Kentucky Bourbon Heritage Month. That’s just the world today.īut Bourbon Heritage Month is a legit government sanctioned kind of celebration. It’s this marketing sphere of internet holidays and that’s fine. We live in this world where there’s a day for everything, right? There’s a national Dog day and Daiquiri Day and Piñata day. September is Bourbon Heritage Month, what does this mean to you? He told us his picks for the best new bourbons, how to become a master bourbon taster and which distilleries are worth a visit for tourists coming into town for the festival. We caught up with Minnick to discuss all things bourbon. He co-created the Bourbon & Beyond music festival with Danny Wimmer in 2017 and will be back on site this week in Louisville as the festival comes back to life for the first year since the pandemic began. Fred Minnick is an author, podcaster and bourbon expert. It balances femininity and brutality excellently, never favoring one over the other. Something to think about.Īnyway, I strongly recommend it. They also share a surrealistic narrative set in a pastoral, sheltered, dystopian environment. I am curious whether or not Les Guerilleres influenced the Louis Malle film Black Moon in any way they share in common a brutal war between the sexes and both emphasize the female side. I love creative formatting used within prose narratives, so these interludes were exciting. A lot of gorgeous pastoral,post-apocalyptic imagery punctuated by pages featuring either large letter "O"s (which,in the book, are vulval symbols) or columns of female names both elaborate and mundane (Clytemnestra, Anne, etc etc). It avoids the "men are pigs" cliche, even when the Amazonian barbarian babes are spearing them down, flaying them open, and tanning their hides. It handles militant feminism in a palatable and beautifully written way that I don't find at all isolating or discomforting. This book really deserves a review more in-depth than "lyrically written disjointed barbarian woman vignettes," but that's all I got right now. Essentially, skaa were slaves for the noble class. Even the most skilled of the skaa class were relegated to being poorly paid and even more poorly treated. Typically, skaa were forced to work as farmers, miners and factory workers for nothing other than “food tokens” as compensation. For the most part, skaa are treated as servants and punished for not supporting Lord Ruler before his rise to power. One major point in the Mistborn series is the societal division between those who supported the Lord Ruler prior to his re-creation (nobility) and those who didn’t (skaa). It is this environment that houses the fantasies to which readers are privy. Before establishment of the Final Empire, Sanderson tells the story of one political leader, the Lord Ruler, acquiring access to a divine power, the Well of Ascension, and using it to re-create the world and everything in it. Mistborn is told in a world known as Scadrial, in a subregion called the Final Empire. Sanderson has since initiated and completed many additional projects, but Mistborn is one of his most popular series’ to date. Mistborn is a series of fantasy novels written by Brandon Sanderson, known for completing Robert Jordans Wheel of Time following Jordans death. Of course, March is the pilot of the escape ship, which will mean he and Jax have to connect quite intimately–in their minds. Still, she’s ornery and ragey so March is able to goad her into coming along. It is obvious to everyone but Jax that the Corp is setting her up, but she’s too busy guilt-tripping herself to see it. They meditate, discuss, and he offers her a choice: escape to freedom or die in the Corporation prison. One day a new visitor arrives in her cell, a haughty and aristocratic man. Because of amnesia surrounding the event, she’s been agonizing for weeks, wondering if she’s falling prey to the jumpers’ end-of-life mental illness. Her unusual genetics allow her to ‘jump’ a ship through space and there was a disaster where she and her partner were piloting a ship that crashed and dozens of people died. It begins with the main character, Sirantha Jax in prison. While I’m not entirely sure of my grasp of genre characteristics, it occurs to me that Grimspace is actually soap opera. One occasionally hears the words “space opera” tossed around the science fiction world and it is certainly been applied here.
